Tropical Island and Coconut Amigurumi

The end of summer is fast approaching but don’t worry, we won’t let it go by without a nice tropical island and coconut amigurumi celebration!  We’re really in a tropical mood these days~

Here is our tropical island amigurumi!  Nice, happy coconut palm tree.

Does it look better with a plumeria or an umbrella?

Couldn’t make up my mind, so I posted both of them!  What do you think works better with the coconut palm tree?  No, what our tropical island amigurumi really needs is some friends!  Yes, animals..

And maybe a wave friend too…

And possibly some more…..coconuts?!

tropical-island-amigurumi-10

The island is getting invaded with coconut friends!  Oh, how I would love for that to happen…think of all the pina coladas I could drink and all the coconut cakes…mmm…. No, I wouldn’t eat such a friendly looking coconut amigurumi!  Well maybe not, it’s their cute faces that really make you want to scarf them down.  Anyway, let’s get away from the subject of a crazy coconut eating frenzy and focus more on the waves.  :)

Yes, this is a wave.  No matter how you look at it…it is a wave!  The top part is the bubbles that form on a wave as it comes crashing towards the shore.  He even arches over like a real wave too–although you can’t really see it that well from this angle.  Here you go…arch!

Can you see how it arches a bit?  If I turned it any more sideways, then you wouldn’t be able to see his fierce expression.  Looking fierce!

But anyway, another amigurumi I wanted to share…coconut amigurumi!

Don’t they look so happy and inviting?  :>  As I was taking the pictures, I really wanted it to look like a coconut that you would see on a label on a bottle of lotion.  So I played around a bit with the positions and this is what I came up with..

But now as I look back on these coconut amigurumi pictures…I feel like something’s missing…

Mother’s Day Monkey Amigurumi

Hey everyone it’s Mother’s Day!  Do anything special for mom today?

Going along with our little monkey of the month theme, we decided to make a Mother’s Day monkey amigurumi!  Surprise!!  Yeah, not much of a surprise but hey it’s a good idea especially if you’ve completely run out of gift ideas for mom this year.  Why not just make a hand-crafted and personalized monkey amigurumi for mom?  Moms always like what their children make them.  It’s like being back in elementary school and bringing home a teacher-forced-me-to in-class art project for Mother’s Day.  And with nothing else to do with it, mom will slap a magnet on it and show it off on the sustenance box:  the refrigerator!!!

Well, hopefully you don’t think of it that way!  :D   We love our mommies and I’m sure they’ll love anything you try to do to thank them.

But if you really want to do something personal and special for mom, then take the crochet mom a Mother’s Day amigurumi approach.

Of course, this monkey would not be considered a mom if it didn’t even have a kid monkey to go with it!

What do you think?  Does the apron on our Mother’s Day monkey amigurumi make it look motherly?

What’s mom going to bake today?  Cakes, cupcakes, pancakes?

How about all of the above.  :)   If any of you remember from my first few posts, those are NOT hats!!!  They are cakes!

They can hold hands too!  Well somewhat…

Oh, and don’t worry this family is still not complete yet!  Are we forgetting someone?  More monkey amigurumis to come!

Thanks to all of you for looking~ Happy Mother’s Day!  Maybe I should go and get a I<3MoM tattoo!  hahaa…ouch.

Cakes, not hats!!!

IMG_7229

What does that look like to you??

IMG_7234

What about this??

The answers better be CAKES!!  not HATS!!!  So, these were some things I crocheted out of stringy thready stuff.  They’re supposed to be cakes, but most everyone I’ve shown it to thinks they’re hats!  The final count: 1/9 correctly identified these objects as cakes.  Isn’t that sad??  Is it really that bad…

I made more, but haven’t found the time to take pictures of them.  When I get around to it, I’ll post more.  In the meantime, are there any suggestions I can do to make them more cake-like?  I need them to be unmistakable!!  No more “I thought it was a hat” business!

Each one is about 1 inch in diameter, and 3/4 inch tall.  I even stuffed it with polyfil, so they’re nice and squishy!  I used the smallest crochet hook possible – no idea what size that is…and some weird stringy thready thing that I don’t know what it’s called.  Sigh, such is my amateur knowledge, I apologize.  Most of the decorations are made of felt and random craft trimmings I found lying around my mom’s craft stash.  The fruits I meticulously made out of cutting microscopic pieces of felt, gluing them together, and then sewing on lines.  Lots of work for the fruit, but I think it’s worth it.
