We went to town with this one–white and pink rhinestones and all.  The one thing that inspired us to make this Valentine’s Day rabbit amigurumi was the pink leopard print felt.  We were at the craft store one day and noticed a couple of new felt sheets next to the usual solid colored ones.  Our crocheter just couldn’t resist the temptation of playing around with one of them, so we ended up picking this leopard print one.

She wanted this Valentine’s Day rabbit amigurumi to be loaded on the sparkle factor, so we glued on the rhinestones everywhere and anywhere we had a chance to.  After seeing how our New Year’s monkey amigurumi turned out, we were excited to try the rhinestone treatment on something else.  As you can see, we lined the ears and all other felt pieces with the pink and white rhinestones.  We even stuck them inside the ears too–do you see them?  Even the cheeks have rhinestones on them!  Ah…rhinestones are just the BEST when it comes to going overboard on the decorating.  Someday, we’re going to glue rhinestones all over our amigurumi!  Don’t worry, we’ll keep you posted on that :) .  It’s going to take a lot of patience, but we’re pretty set on it!  Well, until we get our hands on some more of them…we’re kind of low on them heh heh.

We tried to use the pink leopard print felt more than necessary…but we still have more than three fourths of the sheet left.  What will we do with it??

Instead of just making our rabbit amigurumi all one color, we decided to go with a pink fuzzy tail for this one.  It makes it look cuter, right?

Chinese Dragon Amigurumi

I know it’s way late, but Happy Dragon Chinese New Year – and now let’s celebrate with a Chinese Dragon Amigurumi!!  I actually made this Chinese dragon amigurumi last year, and if you liked my Facebook page you’ve probably seen it already.  Sorry if it’s a repeat for some of you, but I thought it just had to be a part of my blog too!

Making this Chinese dragon amigurumi was like making a mini-Bowser.  I never really realized it before, but Chinese dragons have deer antlers – did YOU know that?  What do they need antlers for anyway?  I just crocheted small tubes and sewed one perpendicularly in the middle part of the other and attached the combined unit to the head.

What I like best about this Chinese dragon amigurumi is the felt work.  My sister had to cut out so much felt for the dragon’s mane, eyebrows, and fins.

The redness of the fins and mane make the dragon amigurumi look like it’s on fire!!  It looks pretty fierce thanks to my sister who likes to put her own scary spin on my cute amigurumis…making it’s eyebrows slanted so it looks like it’s frowning, and giving it fangs. It’s ok, for this dragon amigurumi, a little bit of scariness is just what it needs so I’ll let it go this time around. ;)

It almost reminds me of a dinosaur at this angle!

Here it is posing with a Chinese girl amigurumi my mom crocheted.  For the whiskers, I just crocheted a chain and attached it to the sides of the snout.  Later, my mom sewed a golden thread into it too to give it some extra shine.

I do have a pattern for this Chinese dragon amigurumi too, but just haven’t written it up yet.  It will be up soon for sale on my Etsy.  Please wait for it! :D

That’s it for our Chinese dragon amigurumi!  Hope everyone who celebrates it had a great Chinese new year, and we wish everyone a prosperous and healthy year!

New Year’s Monkey Amigurumi

Let’s celebrate the new year with a bright and shining New Year’s monkey amigurumi!!  Happy New Year everyone!

new-years-monkey-amigurumi-5

new-years-monkey-amigurumi-5

This is our last monkey amigurumi!!  Yay!  It’s been a year since we started on this idea of crocheting monkey amigurumis to represent each month of the year, and we’re finally done!  It sure was a lot of work to do but the process was definitely very fun and exciting.

new-years-monkey-amigurumi-9

For our New Year’s monkey amigurumi, we wanted to go for the sparkling and glamorous look so we went all out on the decorating this time.  Gluing every single piece of crystal onto its face, ears, and body was very tedious.  But in the end, it came out way better than we expected!  We really wanted this monkey to stand out from the rest so we used as many crystals as we could in decorating it.

We recently went on a trip to Las Vegas so that might explain our more glamorous approach to our New Year’s monkey amigurumi.  :)

The crystals were originally for decorating the interior of your car.  They came as a whole sheet of adhesive crystals where you could peel off chains of them and stick them wherever you want.  Mom bought them a long time ago but only used a few of them on her own amigurumi and other creations you can see on her amigurumi doll site.  So she threw the remaining crystals at us and we went to town with it!

Lucky for us we had a boat load of Mardi Gras beads all jammed together in a tiny plastic bag buried in our Christmas tree decorations box so the concept for this monkey was pretty much decided after we discovered it.  They were all collected from dad’s company parties over the years and we just got a few more this year too!

Santa Claus Monkey Amigurumi

We’d like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays with our Santa Claus Monkey Amigurumi!!

christmas-santa-monkey-amigurumi-16

christmas-santa-monkey-amigurumi-16

This is our most festive looking monkey amigurumi to date!  For those of you who are wondering, yes, we are missing one monkey.  But don’t worry, our November monkey amigurumi will not be left out.  Promise!

christmas-santa-monkey-amigurumi-1

christmas-santa-monkey-amigurumi-1

Our Santa Claus monkey amigurumi sits proudly on display in front of our Christmas tree.  All the little Christmas decorations we collected over the years really came in handy for this photo shoot.  The little house was just the right size for taking pictures with the Santa monkey amigurumi. Time for some side views!

christmas-santa-monkey-amigurumi-13

christmas-santa-monkey-amigurumi-13

Since we couldn’t find a small white pom pom for the tip of the hat, we had to crochet a tiny ball out of another type of fuzzy yarn.  Not as round as a pom pom would have been, but it still works right?  :)

christmas-santa-monkey-amigurumi-18

christmas-santa-monkey-amigurumi-18

For this monkey, we did some things differently…like the green hands and feet.  We wanted our Santa Claus monkey amigurumi to look like it was actually wearing gloves and boots.  Then to top it all off, we just lined them with some fuzzy wires.

christmas-santa-monkey-amigurumi-19

christmas-santa-monkey-amigurumi-19

What’s also special about this monkey amigurumi is the white beard.  Instead of using something like cotton for the beard, we just decided to go with felt.  Using something like cotton for the beard probably wouldn’t last as long.  After a while, it’d probably start losing hair (or cotton fibers) there!  That wouldn’t be good…  Cutting the beard was very easy.  All I did was cut out a square, folded it in half, and cut only one side of the beard so that it’d come out symmetrical.

christmas-santa-monkey-amigurumi-21

We also made a Christmas tree topper this year too!

christmas-santa-monkey-amigurumi-5

Like our random Christmas decorations?  There’s a ferris wheel, nutcracker, house, and big crystal cubes!  Our Santa Claus monkey amigurumi is so festive!  It makes all of our previous monkey amigurumis look plain!  Don’t worry, there’s still New Years to outdo this Santa Claus monkey amigurumi :]!!

Rabbit Amigurumi

I know it’s very late, but Happy Chinese New Year nonetheless, and to celebrate it I made a rabbit amigurumi for the year of the rabbit!

rabbit-amigurumi

Here I made the rabbit amigurumi celebrate against a Chinese New Year-inspired backdrop.  The fancy decorations in the background are actually red envelopes, and to top it off I added a little Chinese chocolate gold nugget too.  May the new year bring much luck, happiness, and prosperity to us all!!

I think the most important part of this rabbit amigurumi is the shape of its ears.  I basically crocheted a test tube shape (please excuse the crude image comparison, lab geek talking here), pinched the bottom open end of it to create a concave shape, and sewed it in place onto the head.  I wanted to achieve a 3-D effect, rather than just a flat shape for the ears.  To finish off this rabbit amigurumi’s ears, I cut out a smaller test tube shape from pink felt, lined the inner ears with it and glued it in place.  Sounds pretty simple, but actually sewing the ears in place with that concave shape is kind of difficult, so if you’re ever going to do something similar, it may take a few tries but it’s so worth it!

Which reminds me, someone once asked me what kind of glue I use for my amigurumis.  The answer is Aleene’s tacky glue, which I buy from either Michaels or Joann’s, whichever store is having a sale or gives me a coupon.  The only reason I use it is that’s what was lying around the house at the time I started crafting.  It is definitely much better than using regular school glue, a mistake I once made when I used school glue to stick felt polka dots onto a mushroom amigurumi I made for a friend’s birthday, only to find that all the dots fell off within 2 hours (that, and my friend wasn’t exactly “gentle” with my handiwork either…)!  Just a little bit of tacky glue goes a long way too, because when you slather on a bunch onto a small piece of felt it soaks through to the other side of the felt and doesn’t stick very well because it’s so wet.  The felt piece also hardens as it dries with too much glue, and maintaining the softness of the felt is important for both visual and tactile purposes.  I’ve always wanted to try hot glue, but never got around to it.  If anyone has better suggestions, please share!

Ok, I’ll stop talking about glue now.  You’re probably thinking, “Gosh how much can someone talk to me about glue?!”  I know I can be pretty wordy, but I just wanted to share my experiences with glue with you.  :)

Back to the rabbit amigurumi…of course with Easter coming up and all, I couldn’t resist making this rabbit amigurumi an Easter rabbit too!

rabbit-amigurumi

The eggs were cut from felt, stuffed and sewn together, and then decorated with some glittery glue.  My sister’s handiwork – she’s so good with small details.

rabbit-amigurumi

Oh, and the tail was crocheted from Joann Sensations Beautiful Yarn.  It’s super soft, and so fuzzy – perfect for creating contrast with the worsted weight yarn I used for the body.  I know it sounds wrong, but I find myself pinching the tail a lot because it’s so soft!  Don’t worry, the rabbit hasn’t turned around to bite me yet so it’s all good.

rabbit-amigurumi

Here’s a side view.  Notice how the ears are sewn on in a concave shape.

After I made this rabbit amigurumi, I liked it so much I decided to make another type of rabbit – a floppy-ear rabbit amigurumi!

floppy-ear-rabbit-amigurumi

floppy-ear-rabbit-amigurumifloppy-ear-rabbit-amigurumi

The body and everything else is exactly the same as the other bunny.  The only difference is the ears.  The ears on the floppy ear rabbit amigurumi are huge!  If I were to ever make it again, I would definitely use a sport weight yarn instead of worsted weight yarn just for the ears.  But it’s ok, the floppy ear rabbit amigurumi still has a special place in my heart, even if other people think it looks like a dog!

rabbit-pair-amigurumi

And here the rabbits are very happy together.  All of a sudden, I can’t wait for spring to come!  If you’re interested, you can purchase a plush rabbit amigurumi of any color you’d like at my Etsy.

As always, thank you for looking!  Please stay tuned as I attempt to make all the animals of the Chinese zodiac!  So far, I have more than half done and will be posting them as time permits.  Oh, and one last bit of info – my monkey amigurumis were chosen for the 2012 Crochet Me Amigurumi Calendar!  The patterns for the monkeys, and also a pattern for a polar bear (fondly named Polar Lucibear) will be included in the calendar!  Thank you very much to all who have expressed interest in a pattern for the monkeys.  Please wait patiently with me for publication of the calendar to get your copy of the pattern!  I’ll be sure to update you on the calendar’s status. :D

Baby Whale Amigurumi

I’d like to wish everyone a Happy 2011 New Year, and what better way to start the new year than with a splash from a cute baby whale amigurumi?!

baby-whale-amigurumi

baby-whale-amigurumi

My inspiration for these baby whale amigurumis was actually me wanting a new cell phone charm (because I am totally obsessed with cute cell phone charms…I have a billion of them but I just can’t get enough! Just like how a girl can never have too many dresses, a girl can never have too many cell phone charms! At least, that’s what I like to think…). That, and I couldn’t wait to make something out of these really really thin yarns and miniature crochet hook I bought from Taiwan last time I was there. I don’t even know the hook size of the crochet needle. All it says is “6” but it is very small, so I doubt that means 6 mm, maybe 6 micrometers haha yeah right!

Crocheting with this 6 nm hook was pretty tough. It’s really hard to see the stitches because they really are microscopic! It almost felt like I was crocheting sewing thread. Yet, the small scale was necessary to make a cell phone charm. Regular worsted weight yarn crocheted with even the smallest size crochet hook of 2 mm would give me a humongous cell phone charm. I may like cell phone charms, but I’m not crazy enough to lug around a whole chain of critters! I try to keep things low maintenance.

This is what I came up with:

baby-whale-amigurumi-cell-phone-charm

baby-whale-amigurumi-cell-phone-charm

Then I started getting carried away about playing with colors and making couple charms!

What a cute baby whale couple!  Chu~<3

Here’s a picture for size comparison:

After a hard day’s work of crocheting cute baby whale amigurumis, I picked up my Nintendo DS to play my usual bedtime games, and realized, “Hey!  I can use those charms for my DS too!”

baby-whale-amigurumi-ds-charm

baby-whale-amigurumi-ds-charm

Now, before I start sounding like an infomercial and claiming these baby whale amigurumis can be used as keychains, camera charms, purse charms, rearview mirror car charms (which they totally can!), and magic charms that can transform into a genie and grant you 4 wishes instead of 3 like those regular genies (which I’m pretty sure they can’t), I’ll stop.  Thanks for looking!
